A persistent odor is frustrating because nothing you spray on it works for long. All Dry Services of the Bluegrass's professionals pinpoint the source, neutralize it with deodorizer, cleaning agents and equipment that chemically alter the odor molecules, and leave your property genuinely fresh.

## Why a persistent odor lingers

Odor persists because the particles and volatile compounds causing it are lodged inside porous material: drywall, framing, carpet backing, subfloor, textiles, and in an older house, plaster and original wood that has been absorbing for a century.

If a treatment appeared to work and then failed in July, it was acting on the air rather than on the material. Humidity reactivates residue that never left, which is why most of these calls come in during summer.

## The usual sources

- Smoke and soot: After a fire, and the hardest of these to resolve properly.
- Mold and mildew: The musty note usually arrives weeks before anything is visible.
- Sewage and drain backup: Where the smell means contamination is still present.
- Animal and pet urine: Once it has reached subfloor this is a removal job rather than a cleaning one.
- Long vacancy: Properties closed up for months, including rentals between tenants.
- Protein and cooking residue: Kitchen fires leave a residue that behaves like nothing else.

## The order the work runs in

1. Find what is holding it: The smell is downstream of a material. Until we know which one, nothing else is worth doing.
2. Remove what cannot be cleaned: Carpet pad, saturated subfloor, contaminated insulation. Usually the step that actually resolves it.
3. Clean what stays: Matched to the residue, because the agent that lifts protein smoke is not the one for mold.
4. Treat the remaining porous material: Professional deodorizers and cleaning agents applied to the material itself rather than sprayed into a room.
5. Seal where residue cannot be reached: Framing and subfloor that cannot be fully extracted, so they stop re-emitting.

## Most odor work is not an insurance claim

Worth understanding before you call, because it saves a disappointing conversation later: odor removal is generally only covered when the odor came from a fire. Smoke odor after a covered fire loss is part of that claim, and we document it accordingly.

Almost everything else on the odor side is not covered. A smoker odor, an odor with mold or mildew behind it, and pet urine are the three we see most often, and carriers do not pay for any of them. That is not a reflection on the job; it is how the policies are written.

So All Dry Services of the Bluegrass will tell you whether what you have is likely to be a claim before any work is scoped, and price it as private work when it is not.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does the smell keep coming back after cleaning?

Because the compounds causing it are inside porous material rather than on the surface. Cleaning the surface and treating the air leaves the source untouched, so it re-emits, and humidity accelerates that. Resolving it means removing what cannot be cleaned and treating or sealing what stays.

### Can you get pet urine odor out of a floor?

It depends how far it has gone. On a sealed surface, yes. Once it has soaked through carpet into the pad and reached subfloor, it becomes a removal job for the pad and sometimes for a section of subfloor, followed by sealing. We will tell you which of those you are looking at before you pay for a treatment that will not hold.

### Will my insurance cover odor removal?

Usually only when the odor came from a fire. Smoke odor after a covered fire loss is normally part of that claim. Odor from smoking, from pet urine, or with mold or mildew behind it is not something carriers pay for, and those are the three we see most on the odor side. We will tell you which of those you have before anything is scoped.

### How long does odor removal take?

For a straightforward source that can be removed, often a day or two. For smoke odor after a fire it runs alongside the rest of the restoration and is done last, because cleaning and demolition would otherwise undo it. We will give you a realistic sequence after the inspection.
